DIY Gift Tags

These gift tags are easy to make and decorate, and they are pretty cute. You could put them on a gift bag or something else. I have instructions on how to make all three of these designs, but you could definetley do your own drawings. These are just to give you ideas and help if you are not confident in drawing. You could also use colorful or patterened paper. You can also try using those scissors that make patterns to cut out the tags.

First you need to know how to make the actual tags. We start by making a pattern and you can just use scrap paper for this part. This also makes it easier to make multiple tags. Cut a rectangle that is the width you want the tags to be. Mine is about two inches. Then fold in half to mark the center.

Use a ruler to draw a strait line a little ways down.
Cut from one end of the line strait to the fold at the top. Then repeat on the other side to create a point.

Cut the bottom shorter if your tag looks to long.
Trace this pattern on cardstock. Then cut out with scissors. Use a hole punch at the point.
Decorate your tag before you add the string. I am using embroidery thread. Cut a peice, mine is a little less than a foot. Fold in half and tie a knot.
Put the string through the hole in your tag.
Pull one side through the other loop. It should attatch around the tag and have a loop.

Now you know how to make your tags you can decorate them. Decorate before you add the string. I have three ways to decorate them that are all pretty easy. These are very easy to decorate so make up your own drawings and patterns for them.

Candy Cane
The supplies for this candy cane drawing are a pencil, erasor, and red colored pencil. Start by drawing your candy can shape with pencil.
Draw curves on both ends to finish the shape.
Erase the pencil lines so you can barely see them anymore. Trace over the outline with red.
Draw the stripes on the candy cane.
Color your stripes red. The middle should be light red but on the ends of the stripes make the color darker.

Plaid
The only tool you need for this is markers (unless you use a ruler to make your lines extra strait, then you need that too.) I used two colors. Two colors is the simplest and easiest, but you could use more. You can use a ruler to help make your lines strait if you want, but I did not feel like it. Start with your first color, mine is blue. Draw lines of varius thicknesses in one direction.
Draw more lines in the other direction.
Take your second color and draw lines in one direction. It should overlap with the lines going in the other direction.
Draw lines in the other direction with your second color.
Repeat these steps with more colors if you want.

Christmas Pikachu
You can take the santa hat off of pikachu if this tag is not going to be used for christmas. The supplies for this drawing are more versatile. You can use different things depending on how you like to draw. You need a pencil, erasor, something for line art, and something for color. Start by lightly drawing with your pencil. Follow the next few photos to know what shapes to draw.

Trace over the parts of pikachu you want to be permanant with your pen.
Erase the pencil. Make sure your line art is full dry first so it does not get smudged.
Color. You can also add shading if you like.
You can draw a backround for pikachu if you want. I added a little shadow under him with pencil just so he does not look like he is floating in a void.

Thanks for reading! I hope this is a useful and fun project for you. For more card ideas check out my instructions on how to make pop up cards. Happy holidays!

  1. These are wonderful. We used the pikachu one as an ornament on our tree and it looks great!

  2. Making plaids is very fun. I have never tried before. Your tips helped. So I experimented with consistent patterns and random patterns. I like both. My great grandfather was from Scotland, so I used the colors of the clan tartan (sort of Christmasy too.)
