Summer Graphic Novels
Summer is here, so it's time for my summer graphic novel list! I decided to make this a series, so check out my spring list next. I compiled a list of eight graphic novels I really liked that are set during summer or even just give me summer vibes, so it's time to get that summer reading done! Note that these aren't in a specific order.
Sunny Side Up by Jennifer L. Holm
When Sunny is sent to stay with her grandfather in Florida for the summer, she realizes it isn't going to be the epic summer vacation she was planning. This is one of my favorite books, I like that it isn't too intense but still has important lessons.
Lumberjanes
When Mal, Jo, Molly, Ripley, and April arrive at summer camp, it's not what they expected. Something strange is going on in the woods around camp, and it's up to them to find out what. I love the variety of art styles different books in the series have due to the different authors, especially when I can recognize my favorite authors.
Fifteen year old Morgan has a plan; move out of her tiny island town and come out as lesbian, but until she graduates school, her goal is just to fit in. But, when she is saved from drowning by a mysterious girl, her plans are put at risk. Although I'm not sure the book is actually set during summer, the tropical island and ocean setting makes it a perfect summer read.
At first, Raina is overjoyed to become a big sister, but she soon realizes it isn't all it's cracked up to be. Over the course of a family road trip, Raina shows that sisters need to help each other even when things aren't the easiest. I thought this book did an amazing job showing an authentic sibling relationship, and the road trip that brings it all together makes it a perfect read this summer.
Every summer, Bina and her best friend Austin do everything together, but this year Austin is off to soccer camp. He was acting weird before leaving anyway, so Bina resolves to see how much fun she can have on her own. All Summer Long is a perfect take on a coming of age friendship story, and filled with great art.
Victoria loves horses, but when she tells her friend Taylor she is done competing, they get in a huge fight. Victoria moves to a new stable to get a fresh start; no competition, no friends, no drama. I absolutely love the art style as well as the story. This isn't set during summer, but it just gives me summer vibes for some reason.
Vera just wants to fit in with her friends, which means fancy houses, birthday parties, and summer camp. Her mom sends her to the only camp they can afford, Russian summer camp, and Vera is overjoyed. But, she realizes camp will be a lot different than she expected. I like the art, especially colors, and couldn't help laughing at Vera's summer camp experience.
When Turtle's mom gets a job housekeeping that doesn't allow kids, Turtle is sent to Key West, Florida to live with relatives. Life is a lot different in Florida, but Turtle learns the ropes and is adventuring with her cousins in no time. The setting of the book felt very real, and the characters felt like realistic. I loved the art so much!
I hope you found a book that looks interesting, if I didn't include your favorite summer graphic novel, comment it below. Happy summer, and stay tuned for my fall list!
