DIY Miniature Rug

A rug is a really good addition to doll rooms because it can add some color and texture. They are also really common in real houses, so it is important to add them to doll rooms sometimes. The way I make them is really easy and can be fast depending on the size of the rug and thickness of yarn. It also uses supplies that are easy to get that you probably have on hand. You can change the size of the rug, and you can also create stripes with different colors of yarn.

Start by cutting a rectangular piece of cardboard. Use a ruler to mark lines at even spaces on two sides across from each other. Mine are a half inch apart. Then make short cuts on the lines.

Take your yarn and put the end in one of the notches. Make sure you have lots of extra yarn before it. Then wrap the yarn around the cardboard and stick it in a notch on the other side. Repeat until you get to the end, and cut the yarn with extra.

Tie the two extra yarn strings together.

Cut a very long piece of yarn. Begin weaving it through at the bottom of the cardboard, on the side without the knot. You should leave some extra string sticking out. Weave it by going under one string, then over the next, then under and so on.

Go back in the oposite direction. On the strings you went over, you go under this time and go over the strings you went under last time.

Keep weaving like this until you get to the end of the yarn or cardboard, you reach the size the rug should be, or you want to switch colors. To switch colors or make the yarn longer, stop weaving. Then cut another long piece of yarn. Tie it to the current end. Cut off the excess yarn and continue weaving. If you do this multiple times, make sure the knots are all on the same side, which will be the bottom of the rug when we place it on the floor.

Once you get to the top of the cardboard or the rug is as large as you want it to be, cut the strings on the back.

Tie the first string to the extra yarn you were using to weave. Be sure to double knot it so it stays.

Take the next to strings from the back and tie them together.

Continue tieing the strings together two at a time. Do the same thing on the other side.

The rug should be seperate from the cardboard now and secure from falling apart. Trim the extra yarn sticking off.

Thanks for reading this! I hope this gives you inspiration for your own doll house.
