Monster High Dolls

I decided I would make some posts about dolls I like to use. I will describe these dolls, what I like about them, and things I use them for. I like to make clothes and sometimes accessories for dolls, you might have seen some other posts about it. Recently I have been using fashion dolls, mostly Barbie and Monster High. 

Monster High is one of my favorite types of dolls. They are similar to Ever After High. They are supposed to be the children of classic monster characters, and there are shows (which I have not watched) about them so they all have characters. They usually have a goth style. They are extremely skinny with long legs and large heads. There are lots of distinct face molds. Because they are supposed to be monsters, they have features like fangs and ears, and many of the dolls have colorful skin and hair. The regular dolls are 10 1/2 inches tall. There is also the big sister, little sister and boy dolls which are different sizes.

The clothes the dolls come with are pretty average for fashion dolls. The shoes have really detailed sculpting and are usually easy to put on. The shoes always come in a solid color that is often really bright, and they look much better when painted and the paint brings out the details.

There are two types of Monster High dolls. The original dolls, which are discontinued, could bend at all their joints, even the wrists. The new dolls have a less goth style and less articulation. People prefer the old style because of the higher quality.

The photo below has two of my dolls. The one on the left is an old style draculara doll that I customized. On the right is one of the new dolls (this one is a draculara). They both are wearing clothes I made. I also painted the shoes.

Overall, I really like these dolls. The faces molds help if you are painting them, which is probably why so many doll customizers like them. Most of them can at least bend at the knees. The heads on the older style can not only turn but look up and down to, which really helps for posing them. I really like the large feet. It makes them easier to balance and it looks good compared to the legs. I also like the large heads because it makes them cuter. I also like the detailed shoes they come with. I really like ears and tails and stuff because I think it makes them adorable and fantastical, and they make for really interesting customs if you incorporate them into your character.

Now for some things I do not like. Sometimes I do like the colorful skin tones because it makes it seem more fantasy, but I also do not because it can make it harder to choose outfits. More colors clash, and it feels weird to put them in regular clothes because of the fantasy look. I don't really mind the extreme body shape because I think of it as a stylized thing, and they are not suposed to be people, they are supposed to be monster girls. But a lot of people do not like it, so just something to keep in mind. I don't usually like the outfits and faces they come with because they just aren't my style. Another problem I have is that it is hard to find patterns that are free. There are tons of free patterns for other dolls, but you have to buy most patterns for Monster High. (or make patterns yourself.)
