10 Fantasy Graphic Novels
This post is a different then my usual posts. I love graphic novels, and I put together a list of some of my favorite fantasy graphic novels. I find it harder to find graphic novels compared to other genres, so I hope any one who likes them finds this list helpful. This list is not in any particular order because I can't choose JUST ONE favorite book. If you have not read a lot of graphic novels, remember that the drawings are just as important as the words. I know there are so many great books I forgot to put on my list, but I did the best I could.
Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag
This book is about a boy who is part of a magic family where all the girls become witches and the boys become shapeshifters. Aster wants to be a witch but his family will not let him. Then an something dangerous and magical is out near his house, and Aster may be the only one who can help. I would definitly recomend this book if you like magic and coming of age stories. It is part of a trilogy.
Wynd is a less well known book, but I think it is really good. It is about a society where magic people are feared and killed. A young, magic boy named Wynd and his friends escape from the Bandaged Man, who is hunting them down. I loved this series and I think more people should read it. The art is very good and I loved the rest of the book to.
I love the art in this book, and it has good characters and character development. Nova is learning to be a witch when she meets her childhood friend, Tam, who is a werewolf. Tam and Nova's relationship grows, and together Nova, Tam, and Nova's grandmothers reverse a curse on a demon. If you liked The Prince and the Dressmaker, this book is for you.
This book is about a fashion designer, Frances, who got hired to secretly make dresses for the prince. She slowly gets more famous as he wears her dresses out in his alter identity. Frances and Prince Sebastion become good friends, but when she has to become a secret to protect Sebastion's alter ego from being discovered, Frances must decide if everything is worth it. I love everything about this book; the art, the characters, the story, the setting...
Estranged is about two boys who were swapped at birth. One was placed in the home of a human family, the other taken to a fantasy world full of fae. They must work together to save both worlds from evil. The art in Estranged is stunning. One part I like is that the two main characters look the same, but have distinct, different styles. There is a sequal, The Changeling King, that I also liked.
About a changeling named Nimona who teams up with the villain, Ballister Blackheart. They realize the Institute of Law Enforcment and Heroics is breaking the law and doing dangerous stuff. Then the truth about Nimona changes everything. The setting of this book is very interesting, and so is the character's relationships with each other.
This book is about a teenage girl, Moth Hush, who gets bullied in an all white town. Moth discovers that she and her mom are witches. Moth has to figure out her identity, magic and friendships. The Okay Witch is a very fun book that combines magic, and middle school drama. I would recomend if you like All's Faire in Middle School or Witch Boy.
This book is about a goblin who learns how to take care of tea dragons. She and Minette become closer. The Tea Dragon Society is a delightful light-hearted book. The art is adorable and definitly my favorite part of the book. If you like this book check out the other tea dragon books.
5 Worlds is about Oona, a sand dancer, who must light the beacon on each planet to bring balance to the world and stop the evil Mimick. This series is similar to Amulet and Avatar: The Last Airbender. I liked the character art because the characters were not all just normal humans.
The Nameless City is always being reclaimed by a different conquerors, but no one can stay for long. The people who live in the city stay out of the wars for their own safety, and are treated badly by conquers. Kaidu is part of the Dao who currently control the city. He becomes freinds with Rat, who lives in the city. Rat and Kaidu try to get the government to listen to people who actually live in the city. The art and plot of this series is very good. The setting feels very complete and like the characters could actually be living there.
Thanks for reading this post and I hope you try reading one of these books!
I knew I would forget some books, but one I really want to mention is Beetle and the Hollowbones by Aliza Layne. I love this book. If you like goblins, magic, and adorable blob ghosts, then this book is for you.
