How to Make Witch Hat for ANY SIZE Doll
Halloween is coming up so I thought I would make a costume for a doll! I made this witch hat and you can make one for any size doll. Felt is kind of stiff so it stands up on its own, but on a larger people size I do not think this method would work. You can decorate the hat in so many different ways, I will say how to make flowers like I made for mine. I suggest reading all the instructions before makeing the hat.
First we make the pattern for the hat. Trace these shapes onto paper. Have your doll on hand to get the right sizes. A circle the size you want the brim to be. A half circle. Cut both pieces out. Fold the half circle into a cone shape. Trim and adjust the cone to fit your doll's head. Keep seam allowence in mind.Trace your final shapes onto felt and cut them out. Save your pattern to use again!Sew your cone piece along the side. Turn right side out.
Here is how it fits my doll right now:Place the cone in the center of your circle. Trace around it. Then cut out the circle you traced.Begin sewing the brim and the cone together. Attatch the bottom of the cone to the inner circle of the brim.
Fold the brim like this so the ends of the brim are lined up. Sew down that to finish the brim.I added an elastic strap to my hat to keep it on, but depending on your doll's hair and head size you could use the hat without one. My strap goes around the back up her head under her hair like a headband.
Cut out several small fabric circles. Coat them in glue so they do not fray. If you have a larger hat like for an 18 inch doll, you can cut your larger circles from felt and skip the fray check.Once the glue is fully dry, use scissors to turn the circles into spirals.Roll up the spirals so they look like roses. Use glue to secure.Mark where you want the flowers to be on the hat while it is on the doll's head, then remove it. Use very small amounts of hot glue to secure the flowers to the hat. I tried the liquid glue, but it did not work very well.
Thanks for reading and enjoy! Hope your dolls have a good time trick-or-treating with their new costume.
